A general practitioner (GP) is a broad-spectrum specialist responsible for the early diagnosis and treatment of numerous conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, liver, kidneys, cardiovascular, genitourinary systems, skin, metabolic disorders, and more.
How a General Practitioner Works During the consultation, the GP will inquire about the patient’s health complaints, investigate previous visits to medical facilities, and review their medical history (taking anamnesis). The GP will also conduct a physical examination. Following the initial consultation, the GP may refer the patient for necessary tests (e.g., blood and urine tests, electrocardiogram, blood pressure measurement). Based on the examination results and test findings, the GP will prescribe treatment or, if necessary, refer the patient to a specialist (e.g., an endocrinologist for diabetes, an oncologist for suspected cancer).
