Fecal samples are stored and transported under appropriate conditions to preserve the viability of microorganisms. When refrigerated (4°C), the main pathogens of concern — Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, and pathogenic Escherichia coli — can remain viable for analysis; however, their survival time varies:
Salmonella can remain viable for up to 1–2 weeks, although optimal recovery is achieved within 48 hours.
Shigella is more sensitive to temperature fluctuations; optimal recovery is also within 48 hours.
Vibrio species (including V. cholerae) are particularly sensitive to low temperatures but may remain viable for 1–3 days under refrigeration.
Pathogenic E. coli can survive for up to one week; however, the best analytical results are obtained within 48–72 hours.
Upon receipt of the sample, the laboratory uses specific enrichment media (such as alkaline peptone water and xylose deoxycholate agar) to support the viability of key pathogens.
