Post-exposure rabies vaccination (after a bite, scratch or contact with an animal's saliva) is never postponed – it is given right away, because rabies is a potentially fatal infection.

In other cases, when vaccination is planned as prevention (for example, before travelling or if you are at high risk of contact with animals), it can be postponed:

• If you have a fever – vaccination is postponed until you recover.
• During an acute infectious illness – treatment comes first, then vaccination.
• If you are allergic to vaccine components – a specialist consultation and an alternative are needed.

Only a doctor decides whether to postpone or cancel a preventive vaccination, after examining the patient.

For wounds, the doctor will check when you last had a tetanus vaccination. If your tetanus status is unknown or incomplete, tetanus immunoglobulin (Tetagam) may be needed – it is often given together with the rabies vaccine. The doctor decides.
